When Zoom is the right choice
Choose Zoom in-office whitening when:
- You have an event in 1-7 days (wedding, photoshoot, interview)
- You want the convenience of a single visit and “done”
- You don’t want to manage daily at-home trays
- You’re a low-sensitivity patient (Zoom causes more zinging than gradual whitening)
- Cost is not the primary concern
When take-home trays are the right choice
Choose take-home trays when:
- You have 2-3 weeks for gradual whitening
- You want longer-lasting results (gradual whitening is more stable)
- You’ve had sensitivity issues with whitening before
- Cost matters and you want best value
- You want to be able to do touch-ups for years
- You have isolated deeper stains that need spot treatment
The combination approach (our most-recommended)
Most patients get the best result with both:
- Zoom in-office for immediate 4-8 shade boost (90 minutes)
- Take-home trays for next 1-2 weeks to stabilize and extend result
- Maintenance touch-ups every 3-6 months using the same trays
Combined cost: $600-800. Combined longevity: 2-4 years between major sessions. This is what we recommend for most cosmetic whitening patients.
What both methods cannot fix
- Tetracycline staining from childhood antibiotics
- Internal tooth discoloration from root canal or trauma
- Fluorosis (white spots from too much fluoride during development)
- Stains in existing veneers, crowns, or bonding (these don’t whiten)
- Deep gray staining throughout the entire tooth
For these cases, veneers or crowns are the alternatives. Free consultations: (718) 368-3368.
Frequently asked questions
Is Zoom whitening safe?
Yes — extensively studied and FDA-cleared. Side effects (tooth sensitivity, gum irritation) are temporary 24-72 hours. Long-term safety with normal use is well-established.
Can I whiten while pregnant?
No data shows it’s harmful, but we recommend waiting until after pregnancy and breastfeeding out of caution.
Does insurance cover whitening?
Typically no — whitening is considered cosmetic. Some Medicaid plans for younger patients cover it occasionally.
Will Zoom damage my enamel?
Properly administered Zoom does not damage enamel. The whitening agents work on stain molecules without breaking down enamel mineral structure. Daily DIY whitening over years is more concerning than supervised professional sessions.
How do I prevent sensitivity?
Use Sensodyne or Pronamel toothpaste 1-2 weeks before whitening, then through the protocol. We can also apply a desensitizer immediately after Zoom.
