What is a tooth filling?

A tooth filling restores a tooth that has been damaged by decay back to its normal shape and function. After Dr. Natalia removes the decay, the resulting cavity is filled with a biocompatible material that bonds to the remaining tooth structure, sealing out bacteria and protecting the deeper layers from further damage. Modern fillings preserve more of your natural tooth than older techniques and, when placed correctly, can last 7 to 15 years or longer.

At Eco Dental NY in Brooklyn 11229, we place only mercury-free, tooth-colored composite fillings on visible surfaces. The composite is shade-matched to your natural enamel, so when we’re finished, you can’t see the filling — it looks like a healthy, undamaged tooth. We also offer glass ionomer fillings for specific situations, lab-fabricated inlays and onlays for larger restorations, and protective sealants to prevent cavities before they start. The entire procedure is typically completed in a single visit.

Did you know? Traditional “silver” amalgam fillings actually contain about 50% mercury. While the FDA still classifies them as safe for most adults, many patients prefer mercury-free alternatives — especially for visible front teeth where the dark color is also an esthetic concern. Modern composite is just as durable for typical cavities.

Who needs a tooth filling?

Fillings are indicated when decay has created a cavity in a tooth but the damage hasn’t reached the inner pulp. Common scenarios:

  • A new cavity found at your routine check-up — caught early, often before symptoms appear
  • Sensitivity to sweets, cold, or hot that lingers a few seconds after the source is removed
  • A visible hole, dark spot, or rough edge on a tooth you can feel with your tongue
  • Food keeps getting stuck in a specific spot between or on top of a tooth
  • An old silver amalgam filling you’d like replaced with tooth-colored composite for esthetic or health reasons
  • A small chip or crack on a front tooth that can be repaired with bonded composite without a crown
  • Worn or notched teeth at the gumline from aggressive brushing or grinding, which can be filled to prevent sensitivity and further wear
  • A child or teenager whose new molars would benefit from preventive sealants — a thin protective coating that keeps cavities from forming in the deep grooves

If the decay has already reached the inner nerve, a filling alone won’t be enough — we’ll discuss root canal therapy or a crown. The earlier a cavity is caught, the simpler and less expensive it is to treat.

The filling process at Eco Dental NY

Step 1: Exam & digital X-ray

Call (718) 368-3368 or book online. Dr. Natalia examines your teeth, takes a digital X-ray if needed (very low radiation), and identifies which surfaces of which teeth need treatment. You leave with a written estimate and insurance verification before the filling appointment — most patients have their fillings placed the same visit.

Step 2: Numbing & comfort

We apply topical numbing gel first, then deliver gentle local anesthesia. Within a few minutes you’ll feel nothing in the area being treated. For very small fillings on the surface enamel, anesthesia is sometimes optional — Dr. Natalia will discuss what feels right for you.

Step 3: Removing decay

Dr. Natalia uses a small dental handpiece to remove the decayed tooth structure, preserving as much healthy enamel and dentin as possible. The decay is fully cleared — leaving any behind under a filling would cause it to spread silently.

Step 4: Shade selection & placement

We select a composite shade that matches your natural tooth color. The composite is applied in thin layers and cured (hardened) with a specialized blue light between each layer. Each layer takes only a few seconds to set, but the layered technique produces a strong, well-bonded filling.

Step 5: Shaping, polishing & bite check

Dr. Natalia shapes the filling to match the natural contours of your tooth, polishes it smooth, and checks your bite to make sure nothing feels high. You’ll bite gently on articulating paper while we fine-tune the result. Most patients leave the same visit able to eat normally — the numbing wears off in 1 to 3 hours.

Multilingual care. Dr. Natalia and our team speak Russian, Polish, Ukrainian, and Uzbek. Whether it’s your first filling or your tenth, we’ll explain every step — anesthesia, what you’ll feel, aftercare — in your native language so there are no surprises.

Types of fillings we offer in Brooklyn

Composite (white / tooth-colored)

Our primary filling material. A shade-matched resin that bonds directly to the tooth, providing both structural support and natural-looking esthetics. Mercury-free, durable, and suitable for both front and back teeth. Typical lifespan 7 to 12 years with good oral hygiene.

Glass ionomer

A tooth-colored material that releases small amounts of fluoride into surrounding enamel, helping prevent further decay. Most often used for fillings near the gumline, small cavities in children’s teeth, or under crowns. Slightly less wear-resistant than composite — typical lifespan 5 to 8 years.

Inlays and onlays

When a cavity is too large for a direct filling but the tooth isn’t damaged enough to need a full crown, a lab-fabricated or same-day CEREC porcelain inlay (inside the cusps) or onlay (covering one or more cusps) is the right answer. Stronger and longer-lasting than large composite fillings — often 15 to 20+ years.

Sealants (cavity prevention)

Not technically a filling, but related: a thin protective coating painted into the deep grooves of back molars to keep food and bacteria out. Highly effective for children and teens whose new permanent molars are most vulnerable to cavities. Painless to place, lasts 5 to 10 years.

How much does a tooth filling cost in Brooklyn?

Honest answer at Eco Dental NY:

  • Small composite filling (one surface): $150 to $250
  • Medium composite filling (two surfaces): $200 to $325

  • Glass ionomer filling: $150 to $300
  • Porcelain inlay / onlay (lab or same-day CEREC): $800 to $1,500
  • Sealant (per tooth): $40 to $70

Final cost depends on the size of the cavity, the number of surfaces involved, and the material chosen. ★★★★★

“I had four old silver fillings from childhood that always bothered me — the dark spots showed every time I laughed. Dr. Natalia replaced all four with white composite over two visits. My teeth look completely natural now. The fit is so good I forget which teeth even had work done.”

Tooth filling FAQs

Does getting a filling hurt?

The procedure itself is painless — local anesthesia fully numbs the tooth and surrounding area before any decay is removed. Some patients feel mild pressure and the sensation of vibration from the handpiece, but no sharp pain. After the anesthesia wears off, mild sensitivity to cold or pressure may last a few days and resolves on its own.

Are mercury-free composite fillings as strong as silver?

For typical small to medium cavities, yes — modern composite materials bond directly to the tooth and produce excellent long-term results. For very large cavities or back molars under heavy grinding force, a CEREC crown or porcelain onlay is sometimes a more durable choice. We’ll recommend honestly based on the size and location.

Should I replace my old silver amalgam fillings?

Not automatically. If an amalgam filling is intact, sealed, and the underlying tooth is healthy, there’s no clinical reason to replace it. Replacement makes sense when: the filling is cracked or leaking, decay is forming underneath, it’s on a visible front tooth, or you simply prefer mercury-free materials. Dr. Natalia will give you an honest assessment, not a sales pitch.

How long does a composite filling last?

With good oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups, a composite filling typically lasts 7 to 12 years, and many last 15+ years. Lifespan depends on cavity size, location, grinding habits, and how well you avoid biting on extremely hard items like ice or hard candy.

Can I eat right after getting a filling?

Yes — composite fillings are fully hardened by the curing light during placement, so they’re ready immediately. We do recommend waiting until the anesthesia wears off (usually 1 to 3 hours) so you don’t accidentally bite your numb cheek or tongue. There are no food restrictions otherwise.

Why is my filled tooth sensitive afterward?

Some sensitivity to cold or pressure for a few days after a filling is normal — the tooth is recovering from having decay removed and a new material bonded to it. Persistent sharp pain, pain that worsens over time, or sensitivity to heat that lingers usually means we should re-examine the tooth. Call us if anything feels off.

Does insurance cover tooth fillings?

Most dental insurance plans cover 80% of composite fillings after your annual deductible — fillings are classified as basic restorative care. We accept 18 major plans and verify your specific benefits before treatment. CareCredit financing covers any out-of-pocket portion across monthly payments.
