What is a dental crown?
A dental crown is a custom-made cap that covers the entire visible portion of a damaged or weakened tooth, restoring its shape, strength, and appearance. Crowns are used when a tooth is cracked, has too much decay for a filling, has had a root canal, or simply needs cosmetic reshaping. Once bonded, the crown becomes the new outer surface of the tooth — protecting what remains of the natural structure underneath for 10 to 20 years or longer.
At Eco Dental NY in Brooklyn 11229, we offer multiple crown materials, but our signature service is same-day CEREC crowns. Using a digital scanner, in-office milling unit, and a porcelain block matched to your tooth shade, we design, mill, and bond your crown in a single visit. No goopy impressions. No two weeks in a temporary crown. No second appointment. You walk in with a damaged tooth and walk out with a finished restoration.
Who is a good candidate for a dental crown?
Crowns are indicated when a filling isn’t enough but the tooth doesn’t need to come out. Common scenarios:
- Cracked or fractured tooth — a vertical crack threatens the tooth; a crown holds it together
- Large old filling that has failed — when a filling covers more than half the tooth, a crown is the durable replacement
- Tooth that has had a root canal — root-canaled teeth are brittle and need crown protection to prevent fracture
- Severely worn-down tooth from grinding, acid erosion, or age
- Cosmetically damaged front tooth — chipped, stained, or misshapen tooth where a veneer won’t be strong enough
- Tooth with deep decay too extensive for a filling but not requiring extraction
- Implant restoration — the visible crown that sits on top of a dental implant
- Adequate remaining tooth structure — there must be enough natural tooth left to bond the crown to
If the tooth is too damaged to crown, we’ll discuss dental implants or a bridge instead. We won’t crown a tooth that should be replaced — and we won’t extract one that can still be saved.
The dental crown process at Eco Dental NY
Step 1: Exam, digital X-ray & treatment plan
Call (718) 368-3368 or book online. Dr. Natalia evaluates the tooth, takes a digital X-ray, and confirms whether a crown is the right answer (vs. a filling, root canal first, or extraction). You leave with a written estimate and insurance verification before treatment day.
Step 2: Numbing & tooth preparation
On crown day, the tooth is numbed with local anesthesia. Dr. Natalia removes any decay, shapes the remaining tooth structure to receive the crown, and ensures a clean, stable foundation. This step is identical for both same-day CEREC and lab-fabricated crowns.
Step 3: Digital scan (no goopy impressions)
A small wand-shaped scanner captures a 3D image of the prepared tooth and the surrounding teeth in 2 to 3 minutes. No putty trays, no gagging. The scan uploads directly into the CEREC design software.
Step 4a: Same-day CEREC — mill, fit, bond
Dr. Natalia designs the crown on-screen, matching the contours of your bite. The design sends to our in-office milling unit, which carves a custom crown from a solid porcelain block in 15 to 30 minutes. We try it in, polish, and permanently bond it the same visit. Total time from numbing to finished crown: about 90 to 120 minutes.
Step 4b: Traditional lab crown (alternative path)
If you choose a lab-fabricated crown (zirconia, gold, or PFM), we send the digital scan to a lab and place a temporary crown that same day. You return in 2 to 3 weeks to bond the final crown. Both paths produce excellent long-term results; CEREC is just faster.
Types of dental crowns we offer
Same-day CEREC crowns (porcelain)
Milled in-office from a solid ceramic block, color-matched to your tooth, bonded the same visit. Strength and aesthetics for visible teeth. Typical lifespan 10 to 15 years. The most popular choice for premolars and molars where time matters.
Zirconia crowns
Made from solid zirconium dioxide — exceptionally strong, ideal for back molars and patients who grind. Available same-day in our office for monolithic zirconia, or lab-fabricated for layered esthetic zirconia (front teeth). Lifespan often 15 to 20+ years.
Porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM)
A metal substructure layered with porcelain — durable and time-tested. Slightly less natural-looking at the gumline than all-ceramic options because of the metal core. Still a solid choice for back teeth where appearance matters less than strength.
Gold crowns
The original gold standard. Gold alloy crowns are nearly indestructible and gentle on opposing teeth. Used today mostly for back molars in patients who prioritize durability over esthetics. Often last 30+ years.
How much does a dental crown cost in Brooklyn?
Honest answer: most patients at Eco Dental NY pay between $900 and $1,800 per crown, including the exam, preparation, digital scan, and final bonded crown. Cost depends on:
- Crown material — same-day CEREC porcelain typically falls in the middle of the range; gold runs higher; PFM slightly lower
- Tooth location — back-molar crowns and front-tooth esthetic crowns are priced similarly; complexity varies
- Buildup or post needed — if there isn’t enough natural tooth left, we add a foundation buildup (additional fee)
- Insurance coverage — most dental plans cover 50% of a crown after deductible
- Same-day vs. lab — same-day CEREC and lab crowns are typically priced equivalently at our office
We accept Aetna, BlueCross BlueShield, Cigna, Delta Dental, MetLife, UnitedHealthcare, 1199SEIU, GHI, Anthem, EmblemHealth, DentaQuest, Healthplex, Humana, Principal, Sun Life, AmeriGroup, Ameritas, and Careington. Dental crown FAQs
How long do dental crowns last?
With good oral hygiene, most porcelain and zirconia crowns last 10 to 20 years; gold crowns often last 30+ years. Lifespan depends on grinding habits, decay prevention at the crown margin, and avoiding chewing extremely hard items like ice or unpopped popcorn kernels.
Is getting a crown painful?
The procedure is painless — we use local anesthesia. Some patients feel mild soreness in the jaw or gums for a day or two afterward. Sensitivity to hot or cold can last a few days, especially if the tooth wasn’t root-canaled. Over-the-counter ibuprofen handles any discomfort.
What is a same-day CEREC crown?
CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. We use a digital scanner and an in-office milling unit to design and fabricate your porcelain crown during your visit — typically 90 to 120 minutes total. No goopy impressions, no temporary crown, no second appointment.
Is a same-day CEREC crown as good as a lab-made crown?
Yes. CEREC porcelain blocks meet the same dental-ceramic standards as lab materials. The fit is excellent because the scan and design are immediate (no time for the prep to change). Studies show comparable long-term success between CEREC and lab-fabricated crowns at 10+ years.
Can I eat normally with a crown?
Once a crown is bonded, you can eat anything you would eat with a natural tooth — including steak, apples, and crunchy foods. We do recommend avoiding ice-chewing and biting unpopped popcorn kernels, which can crack any tooth, natural or crowned.
What’s the difference between a crown and a veneer?
A crown wraps the entire tooth and is used when the tooth needs structural reinforcement after damage or decay. A veneer covers only the front of the tooth and is used for cosmetic changes (color, shape, small chips). If your front tooth is mostly healthy but cosmetically imperfect, a veneer is usually better. If it’s cracked or has a large filling, a crown is the right choice.
Does insurance cover dental crowns?
Most dental insurance plans cover 50% of a crown after your annual deductible, subject to your plan’s annual maximum. We accept 18 major plans and verify your specific benefits before treatment. CareCredit financing covers your out-of-pocket portion across manageable monthly payments.
