What is a root canal?
A root canal is the treatment used to save a tooth whose inner pulp — the soft tissue containing nerves and blood vessels — has become infected or severely inflamed. Decay, a deep crack, trauma, or repeated dental work can all push bacteria into the pulp, and the result is usually a serious toothache. The root canal procedure clears out the infected tissue, cleans and disinfects the inner canals, fills them with a stable biocompatible material, and seals the tooth. After the canal is finished, the tooth is typically restored with a crown for long-term strength.
At Eco Dental NY in Brooklyn 11229, modern root canal therapy is far gentler than its reputation suggests. We use profound local anesthesia, optional oral sedation for anxious patients, and digital imaging to map the canals precisely. Most patients describe the procedure itself as less uncomfortable than the toothache that brought them in — and many say the only thing they regret is waiting so long to come in.
Who needs a root canal?
Root canal therapy is indicated when the inner pulp of a tooth is infected, dying, or already dead. Common warning signs:
- Severe, lingering toothache — especially pain that wakes you up at night or won’t quit with over-the-counter medication
- Throbbing or pressure when you bite down or chew
- Prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers long after the source is removed
- Visible swelling on the gum near a specific tooth, or a small “pimple” (fistula) on the gum
- Darkening or discoloration of a single tooth — often the sign of a dying nerve from old trauma
- A deep cavity or large old filling that has reached the pulp
- Cracked tooth where the fracture extends into the nerve
- Abscess at the tooth root visible on X-ray, often with no symptoms until it flares up
If you have any of these symptoms, call (718) 368-3368 — we usually see emergency root-canal patients the same day. Waiting allows the infection to spread, can lead to losing the tooth, and in rare cases turns into a serious medical emergency.
The root canal process at Eco Dental NY
Step 1: Same-day exam & digital X-ray
Call (718) 368-3368 and describe your symptoms — we’ll fit you in. Dr. Natalia examines the tooth, takes a digital X-ray (low-radiation), confirms the diagnosis, and explains whether a root canal will save the tooth or whether extraction and implant would be the better path.
Step 2: Anesthesia & optional sedation
We apply topical numbing gel first, then deliver profound local anesthesia. You’ll feel pressure during the procedure but not pain. For anxious patients, we offer oral sedation — a single pill an hour before the appointment that keeps you calm and relaxed throughout. You stay awake but feel detached from the procedure.
Step 3: Cleaning the canals
Dr. Natalia opens a small access point in the top of the tooth, removes the infected pulp tissue, and uses tiny flexible instruments and antibacterial irrigation to clean and shape each canal. Front teeth have one canal; molars typically have three or four. This is the longest part of the visit but is performed under full anesthesia.
Step 4: Sealing the tooth
Once the canals are clean and dry, we fill them with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha and seal the access opening with a temporary or definitive filling. Most single-canal teeth finish in a single 60-90 minute appointment; molars sometimes need 90 to 120 minutes or a second visit.
Step 5: Final crown
Root-canaled teeth are brittle without their original pulp, so they almost always need a crown within a few weeks to prevent fracture. Same-day CEREC crowns are available at our office, so the entire treatment — root canal plus crown — can finish in one or two visits total.
Types of root canal treatment
Single-canal (front teeth, premolars)
Front incisors and canines typically have one canal; premolars usually one or two. These cases are often the simplest and finish in a single 60-90 minute appointment with same-day relief.
Multi-canal (molars)
Upper and lower molars usually have three to four canals, sometimes with extra small accessory canals. Molars take 90 to 120 minutes and may need a follow-up visit if the canals are complex or curved. Long-term success rates are excellent (90%+) when treatment is thorough.
Retreatment (failed prior root canal)
If a tooth was root-canaled years ago and is causing new symptoms, retreatment may save it. We remove the old filling material, re-clean the canals, and reseal. Retreatment is more involved than the original procedure but often less invasive than extraction and implant.
Apicoectomy referrals
If retreatment isn’t possible (because of an existing post-and-crown, for example), a surgical apicoectomy — removing the infected root tip from the side — may be the answer. We refer these specialized cases to a trusted Brooklyn endodontist and coordinate the final crown back at our office.

“I had been avoiding a root canal for two years because I was terrified. Dr. Natalia explained the sedation pill, the numbing, every step. I felt nothing — actually fell asleep at one point. The toothache that had been ruining my sleep for weeks was completely gone the next morning. I should have done this years ago.”

Root canal FAQs
Does a root canal really hurt?
No — modern root canals are not painful. The procedure feels similar to getting a filling. Local anesthesia fully numbs the tooth and surrounding area, and oral sedation is available for anxious patients. The pain people associate with root canals is almost always the pain of the underlying infection, which the procedure relieves.
Can my root canal be done in one visit?
Most root canals at Eco Dental NY are completed in a single 60-120 minute appointment. Single-canal front teeth are fastest; molars with three or four canals take longer. Complex retreatment cases sometimes need a second visit.
I’m anxious about dental work — what sedation do you offer?
We offer oral sedation — a prescription pill taken about an hour before the appointment. You stay awake but deeply relaxed throughout the procedure, often with little memory of it afterward. We’ll discuss your anxiety in detail at the consultation and choose the sedation level that fits.
What happens if I don’t get a root canal?
An infected tooth pulp doesn’t heal on its own. Without treatment, the infection spreads — eventually causing an abscess, severe pain, swelling, and almost always loss of the tooth. In rare cases, untreated dental infections become serious medical emergencies. The earlier we treat, the higher the success rate.
Will I need a crown after my root canal?
Almost always yes — especially for back teeth. Root-canaled teeth lose their internal blood supply and become brittle. A crown placed within a few weeks of the root canal protects the tooth from fracture. Skipping the crown is the single biggest reason root-canaled teeth eventually fail.
How long does a root-canaled tooth last?
With a properly placed crown and good oral hygiene, a root-canaled tooth can last a lifetime — there’s no automatic expiration date. Long-term success rates exceed 90% at 10 years when both the root canal and the crown are done well.
Does insurance cover root canals?
Most dental insurance plans cover 50% to 80% of root canal therapy after your annual deductible — root canals are classified as a basic restorative service. We accept 18 major plans and verify benefits before treatment. CareCredit financing covers any out-of-pocket portion across monthly payments.
