The first 10 minutes
Before anything else, slow down and do these four things. They protect the tooth and buy you time.
- Rinse gently with warm water. This clears blood and debris so you can actually see what happened.
- Save any pieces you can find. Put fragments in a small container with milk or your own saliva. For a larger break we can sometimes use the piece, and even when we can’t, it tells us how the tooth fractured.
- Control bleeding and swelling. Bite on clean gauze for a few minutes if the gum or lip is bleeding. A cold compress on the outside of the cheek keeps swelling down.
- Cover a sharp edge. A piece of sugar-free gum or dental wax over the jagged edge protects your tongue and cheek from getting cut up while you wait.

The one true emergency: a tooth that’s been knocked out
If an adult permanent tooth is completely knocked out, the clock is running. Pick it up by the crown (the white part), never the root. Rinse it briefly with water without scrubbing. If you can, slip it back into the socket and bite on gauze to hold it. If you can’t, put it in a cup of milk — not water — and get to us or the nearest emergency dentist immediately. Managing pain until you’re seen

- Never put aspirin directly on the gum. It’s an old folk remedy that chemically burns the tissue and makes everything worse.
